The “secret” to unlock the current LightWave’s modeler to a compentent speed modeling package consist of four important steps to learn and change in LightWave: Still though, when it comes down to it, I do model with an incredible speed in LightWave compared to the other apps I am comfortable modeling in. Even though Modo is the most elegant modeler I’ve ever worked with, it do still lack a few operations (which I guess might be added when 401 comes) and 3ds max has also grown a lot as a modeler in the last couple of years, and is very competent by now. My LightWave modeling experience goes back to LW v3.5, so I know it pretty much inside and out, and my recent experience with other modeling packages comes to using Modo quite regularly and also to some extent I model in 3ds max when I do on location work. This has lead to that the competition has caught up and even surpassed LightWave in this time.ĭo we have to wait until LW10, which supposedly will get the long awaited modeling updates? Or can the current release be tweaked to still be a top modeler for a speedy workflow? According to me the latter holds true. So what we have here is a former state of the art modeler that hasn’t received much love in 7 years except for a few minor updates, acquired 3rd party tools and some halfbaked additions.

Then the years passed and because of different reasons the modeler became neglected, in the v8.x (2004) update the modeler was pretty much ignored and when 9.x (2006) was released the modeler still didn’t receive any significant changes. The modeling workflow was considered one of LightWave’s strongest features and this held true up until v7.x (2001). LightWave 3D was once known as the fastest polygon and subdivision modeler on the market. Even if it stalled for a few years right after Maya was released.About a year ago, I wrote a post about customizing modeler, since then I’ve completely switched to a 64-bit environment and with LightWave 9.5 just released, it was about time for an updated version. It's the exact opposite with Softimage, it surpassed Maya in many ways. The reason why Maya i s the industry standard is because people are thinking if something is new it has to be better, and they are stubborn. Back then FK, IK existed in Softimage beofre even Maya came out, and Softimage can handle high poly meshes a lot better, with ICE in version 7, and syflex integrated in believe version 2010 it is a beast that Autodesk isn't putting in the spotlight, and not getting enough credit. MOre modern, Even Maya mimics Softimage in some aspects. Maya is no better than Softimage, just a nicer UI. Ever since Maya came out in 1999, Sotimage was kind of put away for a few years, but hey.

Since Softimage was once a industry standard software for the U.S. Will it integrate Modeler and Layout or what will happen in the near future no one knows. For Softimage you can find some good tutorials on Digital Tutors, an online commercial site that provides with educational material for most of the 3d packages, Lightwave is the only one not listed, they actually don't know what will happen next since extinction is coming for Lightwave and Sotimage, but I would say Softimage will stay in the game for a while longer since NewTek isn't too certain how it will develop their next version. I would be more worried about the future of Lightwave 3d, since no education material can be found except for some Amazon books perhaps. Hi, I might be too late to answer your question. I would be very appreciative in any opinions the folks here might have about the choices between XSI 7.01, XSI 2011 and Lightwave 10.1. I've searched the forum and lightwave's problems with smoothing are one reason (of many) I'm feeling trepidation about the shift.

I'm considering Lightwave 3d 10, and follow on CORE as my new core to my workflow. Training support and integration with other programs (see GoZ for example) appear to be leaving XSI behind.

I'm also fearful that Softimage has a limited lifecycle looking ahead.
#Lightwave 3d work upgrade
I'd rather not upgrade to Softimage 2011 for both cost reasons and general principle on how autodesk has handled the takeover. Unity asset creation is my primary purpose for the package, so the integration pipeline is critical to my decision.
#Lightwave 3d work windows 7
I've enjoyed the package, but current issues with the older licensing server and Windows 7 have me on the precipice of an upgrade. I currently do my modeling and animation work in an older version of Softimage XSI 7.01. I'm interested in the support communities insight on my modeler woes.
